  • A Quick Tutorial to Help You Navigate the New Facebook Interface

Posted Nov 15th, 2011 By in Facebook, Social Networking With | No Comments

If you’ve logged into Facebook in the past few weeks, you’ve probably noticed that it looks different. Dramatically different. So how are you supposed to navigate through your favorite social media website with these newly integrated features?

To better understand the new Facebook and continue to connect with friends in social media, here is a quick tutorial that you can use to navigate through the changes:

    1. Understand the new Newsfeed. With the major changes made to the Facebook newsfeed recently, users have been complaining that they want their old newsfeed back. Most recently, Facebook has decided to come to a compromise. They’ve made a small change in the newsfeed to let users check out recent stories in reverse chronological order, just like in the old days of Facebook. The good news for Facebook users is that Facebook is listening to your feedback and will take action if enough people are unhappy. Facebook will now have a new drop-down menu for the newsfeed with either Recent Stories or Highlighted Stories first – user’s choice.

    2. Get acquainted with the Ticker. At the right side of the page, you will now find a real-time Ticker that tells you exactly what friends are doing, similar to the real-time updates on Twitter. This real-time Ticker is a live feed of all Facebook activity in your group of friends. All you have to do is click on any post in the Ticker to see activity and comment – without ever leaving your home page. If you find this annoying, you are not alone. Many Facebook users feel that the new Ticker makes the page too busy and distracting. But it also provides you with the opportunity to stay connected to all activities that your friends engage in every second of the day.

    3. Use the Subscribe Button. If you are like most of the world, you have quite a few Facebook friends that you would rather not hear from on your newsfeed. Maybe they talk too much about themselves, maybe they shamelessly promote their business, or maybe they post a picture after picture of their baby. Whatever the reason, using the new Subscribe button will let you determine how much information you want to see from a specific friend. You can use this Subscribe button to weed out friends you don’t want to hear from as often and keep tabs on close friends in the newsfeed.

    4. Change your friend settings. If you are going to send a friend request to a new friend, hover over the Friend Button on their profile first. This will give you options to add someone as a Close Friend or Acquaintance, determining how many of their posts that you will see in your feed.

SO NOW, it is my turn to give back to the community through this one-of-a-kind EXCLUSIVE giveaway! (more…)

  • Join Me On Facebook for “Fun Friday” Giveaways

Posted Sep 18th, 2010 By in Facebook, Social Networking With | No Comments

As you may already know, I launched my new Facebook page a couple of months ago.  My goal for this page is to educate likers on how to properly use the social web  for their business and to empower them to think of unique and creative ways to engage their audience as part of a long-term strategy.

On October 1, I will be announcing a huge giveaway exclusive to all likers of the page.  If you are not already a liker, I would love to have you as part of the community so you can join all the excitement!

A couple of weeks ago, I announced “Fun Friday” to give back to my community. This is my attempt to create a fun learning experience, get to know and educate my community as much as I can as well as give them an opportunity to get to know me better.  Every Friday, I post a trivia question or scavenger hunt at 9 a.m. Pacific.  The first person to answer the question or find the item I hide of the hunt, will receive a 1-hour complimentary phone/Skype consultation with me.

I already gave away three free consultations and all were extremely excited about what they learned just from a 1-hour phone call.  Below are the unsolicited comments they posted on Facebook and Twitter:

This week, Jarrett Gucci of Dynasty Web Solutions (the brilliant mind behind my Facebook page design and a WordPress WIZ) helped me come up with a fun scavenger hunt.  All participants had to find “Mini Mirna” (a small image of me) on Jarrett’s page, then double click my image to receive a social media tip (see images below).  The first person who reported the tip back on my page won the scavenger hunt.  There were approximately 30 people who liked Jarrett’s page to try to find me.

A lot of creativity and planning went into this, and I hope many of my Facebook likers learned a new fun way to engage their audience with social networking.  This is what it means to entertain, educate, and collaborate — all essential elements of social media.

There I am standing on top of the world!

It’s been a blast every week, and I hope a lot of you will join us every Friday and spread the word, please!

  • The Visa Business Network Invites Mirna Bard to Help Mentor 100,000+ Business Owners

Posted Aug 14th, 2010 By in Blogging, Business, Facebook, Social Media, Social Networking With | 10 Comments

A couple months ago, Visa Business Network’s Outreach team discovered my blog and reached out by completing the form on my site to let me know that they find my blog to be very impressive and a valuable resource to businesses. They asked if they could feature my blog on the Visa Business Network as part of their public blog roll.

VisaMentorAnd what was even more exciting was Visa’s invitation the following week, inviting me to be one of the expert mentors for their 100,000+ active member community.  Of course, I accepted and anxiously waited for their announcement this week. Yeah! :D

Recently, the Visa Business Network launched enhancements and new features to their community site to help small businesses connect learn, and accomplish goals.  Visa quickly realized that social media is playing a huge role in business and wanted to provide its community with a better way to connect, learn, and grow.

    The new features include:

Business Goal Toolkits – These are step-by-step “how to” guides that lead small business owners through the process of setting and achieving business goals.

Small Business Mentor Program – Small businesses will now get personalized help and guidance from other successful small business owners through a question and answer forum.  Through the mentor program, members are able to collaborate by asking questions related to their goals and receive personalized advice and responses from small business peers and mentors with experience across a wide range of industries.

Mentors were invited based on the following criteria:

    - Expertise in the topic/goal area

    - Previous mentor experience

    - Small business experience. Since this is a community of peers, owning or working for a small business is required

    - Previous active online community involvement

    - Ability to help provide initial goal content

    - Enthusiasm for selected goal and helping small businesses succeed

“We are thrilled to have our new mentors on board as we launch the Visa Business Network with new features. Our mentors are leaders in their respective fields and will lend their expertise to small business owners on the Visa Business Network, who are looking for guidance as they work to grow their businesses. The mentors will be vital both as a resource and participant in the growing Visa Business Network community, and we look forward to working with them to encourage and foster small business growth.”  Rich Yang, Head of Small Business Marketing

I will specifically be mentoring businesses on creating and promoting Facebook business pages to help businesses grow and thrive on this giant social networking site.  My answers will enable many business owners to gain more clarity, eliminate confusion, and reduce overwhelm when it comes to promoting their businesses on Facebook.  So, I invite you to ask away!

Content Ranking – Their new ranking system will also provide small businesses with quick access to the resources and articles fellow small business owners have declared most useful.

I am sharing this with my readers for two reasons:

    1. This opportunity happened due to my content strategy and online visibility.  So, this is a reminder to all of you.  By showcasing your expertise online, you will open many possibilities.  As I always say, you never know who is reading, watching, listening and sharing your content online. Transparency does equal opportunity, and this can come from anywhere and anyone (including people who you think are competitors).

    2. It is easy and free to join Visa’s rapidly-growing community.  You can quickly create your profile by visiting  www.visabusinessnetwork.com.  You can also join their Facebook community.

What do you think of Visa’s idea? And, do you have any great success stories due to your blogging efforts?  I would love to read them in the comments below!

  • Ask Mirna: Are there any sites that offer updates about Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter?

Posted Aug 3rd, 2010 By in Ask Mirna, Facebook, LinkedIn, Social Networking, Twitter With | 2 Comments

    Ask MirnaQUESTION:

Hi Mirna.  Are there any sites that offer updates about Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter? I would like to stay in the loop with new things that come out, etc.  I thought I would pick your brain about some of your favorites. – Dawn P.

    ANSWER:

Thank you for the great question Dawn.  As you know there are thousands of sites and many of them are very helpful.  Since I don’t have time to keep track of all of the sites that offer information on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, I normally like going straight to the source to get updates and accurate information.

Here are some very helpful links for each of the networking sites that you asked about:

    Facebook  Business Page

    Facebook’s Blog

Facebook’s Developer Blog (Although this is for developers, I still find great information sometimes.)

You may also want to check All Facebook.

    Twitter’s Blog

Twitter Status (The best way to get updates when the site is down, which seems like a lot lately.:D)

    Twitter for Business

    LinkedIn’s Blog

    LinkedIn for Developers

You may also have seen my blog about LinkedIn. There are excellent training videos for every module of the site.

I recommend to subscribe to the RSS of all these blogs so you can stay updated on all important information.  Also remember, all of these sites have a “help” section if you need any questions answered.

    Good luck!
