FAQs – Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

What is search engine optimization (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimization or SEO is a form of search engine marketing.  It is the process of getting a website to the higher rankings in the natural or the organic search results of search engines through targeted keywords. Normally, the higher a site ranks in the search results, the more searchers will visit that site.

Does every website need search engine optimization?

For your target audience to find your website on search engines, your site’s pages have to be optimized for relevant keywords or keyword phrases that match the phrases your target audience types into search queries. If you know your prospective customers are online searching for the products or services your business offers, then search engine optimization is crucial; otherwise, these prospects will not find you, but will find your competitors.

How can I make my website more search engine friendly?

Try to avoid using large amounts of multimedia on your website. This includes using movies, Flash development, JavaScript or basic scripting (forms), frame pages and re-directs. If you have re-directs on your page, many search engines will penalize, or not index your page at all. Instead focus on lots of fresh and relevant content.

Will I see immediate results with search engine optimization?

How fast you see results will depend on how competitive your industry and keywords are. Search engine optimization is never immediate. This is an ongoing process that takes time and dedication. You will start seeing some results within a couple of months; however, dedicate at least six to nine months to the SEO project in order to get the maximum results. Please keep mind, it is ultimately up to the search engines. For example, it may take Google up to one year to rank you well in the search queries. For immediate results, I recommend using pay-per-click advertising (sponsored ads) until your site’s ranking improves in the natural results of the search engines.

How do search engines decide on rankings in the natural (organic) search results?

Search engines find relevant content for the search results by sending "robots" or "spiders" to crawl or analyze your site and index its content. Then, unknown algorithms are used to determine whether the site is relevant and should be included in the search results.

What do I mainly need to do to achieve high rankings in the search engines?

There are three steps you need to take:

1. Use the right keywords

2. Have lots of fresh and unique content on your site and update constantly

3. Get lots of relevant authoritative sites to link to yours and use your keywords in the links.
