  • 3 Ways to Make Your Social Media Marketing Better

    Print Friendly

There are a lot of people who don’t really “get” social media marketing. Unfortunately, these people are missing out on a tremendous opportunity that could change the way they do business. Why do they feel that this type of marketing is a dead end road? Often, they have tried Twitter or Facebook and have found it to be useless, most likely because they weren’t using it correctly.

With that in mind, I thought I would offer a few tips on how to make your social media marketing more effective, no matter which platform you are working with.

    1. Beef up your profile. Use a real photo to show people who you are and take the time to write at least one long paragraph about yourself, if not more. While you can certainly promote your business here, make sure to include some personal info, as well. People prefer to connect with humans, not business robots.

    2. Interact. The whole point of social media is to be . . . well, social! Make a point of sending personal messages once in a while, voting for a friend’s site and just generally not being a lone wolf.

    3. Don’t automate everything. It’s not a crime to have your blog automatically post a notice on Twitter or Facebook each time you update, but it IS rude if that´s the extent of your social networking. You need to make sure that you actually talk to people, as well (see #2) if you want this marketing method to work for you.

Bonus Tip: Get some help. If you don’t know how to make social media work for you, stop stressing and get a professional to help you out! Your business can benefit greatly from marketing properly, so make sure you are doing it the right way.

Nice tips. One way to solidly show your fans or potential customers that everything isn't just automated is to make a short, fun video periodically for YouTube, AdWido, etc. to share with them.

    Debbie,

It is good to know that you are getting started with social networking for your business. There are many social media small business success stories. Use assitants as much as you can, be patient and consistent and it will make a huge difference in your business.

    Mirna,
Thanks for the tips. I know consistency is the key. I'm trying to set a routine for myself so I can balance my time at home/studio between social media/computer and painting, making samples for clients, creating new art, etc. Once I get that figured out, I know it will be so much better. I just took a local course today on using Twitter, Facebook, and blogging. Very informative.

Nice easy tips that point out the one obvious mistake a lot of people make about social media – they forget it's social! Not automating and being a real, social participant are great common sense tips to get started.

I know the key is persistence and consistency and that really is the hard part. I’ve also just started on Facebook and Twitter, and I am investing a lot of hours with very little return yet. Can be quite disheartening.

    Vanessa,

Sorry to hear that you are investing a lot of hours on Twitter and Facebook with no results. You may want re-evaluate what you are doing and make sure you have a strategy. Sometimes it is the small change with your strategy and tactics that make all the difference. Also, make sure you are targeting ideal audience on these two sites…it’s is not enough to have many likers, friends, or followers — they have to be the right ones. Good luck to you!

Thank you so much for your advice Mirna. I have only been twittering for about 3 weeks, and on FB for 2 months, so I guess I need to be more patient. I am led to believe in terms in social media marketing it’s no time really.
